Why Should I Have a Classroom Theme?

A classroom theme is a simple way to make your classroom a homey place for both you and your students!  I feel that a room needs to look like the teacher cares about it to convey the importance of students caring about it too.  When students feel like the teacher put in the effort to make the space safe and homey, they feel more welcome and more excited to come to school each day.  Each teacher has their own preferences for what a theme would look like in their classroom, but here are my go-to items to incorporate a classroom theme.

By looking for specific places to integrate the theme, you don't overpower the room or over decorate.  If you are able to find themed items that you would already have had in your classroom without a theme, it doesn't over power the room or make it feel cluttered.   

Teachers also shared that beyond classroom decorations, they often include their theme in the classroom jobs, rules, and other daily routines.  It can also be integrated into newsletters and other types of home communication, behavior management, and even your own clothing, mugs, teacher bag, etc.​

Something I have always been fond of is using ceiling space to bring in more decorations and giving your classroom visual interest at a different height.  I asked my friends to share their best uses of the ceiling for decorating and you can see how those decorations can be used to bring in your Classroom Theme!  Whether you're using colored pompoms, a home-made fringe banner, or physical items that hang high on the walls, it is important to think all the way up when decorating!

Whenever possible, I am a big supporter of making it myself or thrifting it from a resale shop.  I think these items are perfect for bringing in Classroom Theme to a space without breaking the bank!
